CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Bowen Sargent and Virginia men’s golf became back-to-back ACC champions on April 27 after besting Stanford in the ACC Championships in Panama City, Florida.
Ben James, Bryan Lee, and Paul Chang each triumphed over their opponents. Chang finished his ACC career going 5-1 in ACC Championship match play. James ended his matchup with four birdies in six holes. Lee was completely unbeaten in match play at this year’s championship.
The selection show for the NCAA Tournament is Wednesday.
Men’s lacrosse
In a year that saw it start 3-4, the Virginia men’s lacrosse team captured its 20th ACC Championship in a dominant win over the North Carolina Tar Heels 16-6.
The Cavaliers clinched the title following an opening round 15-10 upset over No. 1 Notre Dame, whom they had beaten already in the regular season, Friday evening. Four goals from Truitt Sunderland and five points from Brendan Millon powered a dynamic offensive performance to once again see the Irish off.
That set up the showdown with the No. 2 seeded Tar Heels. The ‘Hoos scored a staggering 12 unanswered goals after North Carolina took an early 2-0 lead. After blanking the Heels in the second quarter 6-0 and outscoring them 5-4 in the second half, the Cavaliers hoisted the trophy and will next enter the NCAA Tournament the No. 5 seed. In its first-round matchup, Virginia will battle Georgetown at home on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
Tennis
Both men’s and women’s tennis played host to the Charlottesville Regional of the NCAA Tournament over the weekend, and both will be making their way to the Super Regional after notching two victories at Boar’s Head.
Rider could not manage a point against the men’s team on Friday evening in the programs’ first ever meeting. The ‘Hoos won comfortably 4-0, and the team’s stars padded their individual records in the 2026 campaign.
Virginia had a much more difficult time with Columbia in the second round. The Lions took the doubles point and jumped out to an early lead in singles’ play, but four straight wins from Virginia, all but one featuring them playing from behind, culminated in a 4-2 triumph to send them to the Super Regional.
The nation’s No. 1 ranked singles’ player, Dylan Dietrich of UVA, punctuated the night with a victory over national No. 5 Michael Zheng to signal the team’s intent going into the next round, in which they’ll host South Carolina.
Women’s tennis drew Saint Francis as its opponent to open the tournament, and much like Rider against the men’s team, Virginia handled them comfortably 4-0.
However, unlike the men’s team, the Cavalier women had barely any trouble besting their second-round opponents, Washington, by a score of 4-0. Virginia only dropped one doubles match to the Huskies, winning the remaining matches of the duel. The winner of the Baton Rouge Regional will take on Virginia in Charlottesville next Saturday.
Softball
After a terrific showing against NC State to close their home slate during the regular season, the Hoos ended the year in the win column by blanking Liberty in Lynchburg, 4-0. Jade Hylton started the scoring early with a lead-off home run in the top of the first inning, and Macee Eaton closed it with a bases loaded walk in the fourth. First-year Taylor Smith and Senior Eden Bigham combined for the shutout, with Bigham earning the win by pitching the final five innings of the game.
The ‘Hoos will face Pittsburgh Wednesday night at Palmer Park to begin their run in the ACC Tournament. It is the first time Palmer Park has played host to the ACC Tournament. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
Baseball
Baseball welcomed George Mason to Disharoon Park on Tuesday. The Patriots got out to an early 1-0 lead in the third, but starter Max Stammel held firm, and the Virginia bullpen kept the visitors quiet for the rest of the game while the Virginia offense clawed their way back and took the victory 5-1. The game against Norfolk State was canceled due to Wednesday’s rainstorm in the area.
The Cavaliers next teed up a doubleheader with Radford on Sunday. Kyle Johnson threw five innings of one-run baseball in game one, before a seven-run sixth inning turned a 3-1 game into a 10-1 game. Virginia saw off a run-rule victory in the seventh by a score of 11-1. Highlighted by a two-run triple from their second baseman, Joe Tiroly, Virginia swept the Highlanders out in game two with a rollicking 14-5 triumph.
Virginia goes into the exam break before a three-game set against California this weekend at Disharoon Park.
