CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Virginia men’s squash took down rival Drexel in the final of the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference Championships, winning 8-1.  The Hoos have faced the Dragons in the last five conference finals and won the Holley Cup for the fifth time in seven years on Sunday.  They have one final regular season test against No. 1 Trinity in Philadelphia on Saturday at 1 p.m.. 

The women’s team dropped their conference final matchup to Stanford by a score of 7-2, and they too will conclude their regular season at No. 6 Trinity, same day and time.   

Baseball 

The Chris Pollard era began in explosive fashion over the weekend at Disharoon Park with a 13-5 win against Wagner on Friday evening.  Following the late surge in game one, the Hoos put up 25 runs in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader then program-record 31 in the second to finish off the opening weekend sweep.

Softball 

The Hoos entered the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 at No. 25 in advance of the Longwood Lancer Tournament this past weekend following a strong performance at last weekend’s Kickin’ Chicken Classic to open the season.  

Before the Lancer Tournament, UVA handled Delaware State comfortably on Friday  20-0 in five innings in its home opener. Inclement weather cancelled and postponed their Sunday contests in the tournament, but the Hoos made the most of the three games they did play, beating Toledo 8-0 and the hosts, Longwood, 3-0.   

Virginia will host the Mizuno classic this weekend at Palmer Park starting on Thursday, battling Maryland, Ohio State and Delaware.   

Lacrosse 

As the ice continues to melt at Klöckner Stadium, Virginia women’s lacrosse played its second game of the season behind closed gates on the Lower Turf Field against Richmond on Wednesday.  The Spiders put six past the Virginia defense in the second quarter and weathered a Virginia comeback in the second half to edge out a 12-11 victory over the Hoos. Following that defeat, the Hoos hit the road for a tough test against No. 6 Maryland, falling 17-9 to the Terps.

Virginia stays on the road this week, facing off with Liberty on Wednesday and then taking on No.5 Notre Dame on Sunday. Both of those games will be at 4 p.m. 

Meanwhile, the men’s team took on No. 8 Richmond on the road Saturday afternoon.  The Spiders ran roughshod over an understaffed Virginia defense and outscored the Hoos in the final three quarters of play, earning an 18-12 victory and handing the Hoos their first loss of the season.  Virginia will next face Stony Brook on the road on Saturday at noon.    

More Action 

Virginia men’s golf triumphed over all opposition in the Puerto Rico Classic last week.  They shot 55-under-par, 18 strokes better than second place LSU.  Women’s golf is currently in action at the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Fla. which is set to wrap up on Tuesday.  That day is also the final day of competition for Virginia men’s tennis at the ITA Indoor Team Championships in Dallas.
