CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)-   No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis fell on the road to No. 2 Ohio State in a battle of top-ranked teams by a score of 5-2.  Dylan Dietrich and Andres Santamarta Roig made sure the ‘Hoos got onto the scoreboard, but the Buckeyes won every other game in the match to clinch the upset.  The Cavaliers will now head to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Dallas starting on Friday.

Virginia women tennis competed at their iteration of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Evanston, Ill. over this past weekend, dropping their opening match to No. 1 Georgia 4-1 before besting Northwestern 4-1 before falling to Tennessee 4-2.  The Cavaliers will stay on the road to face Virginia Tech on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Both lacrosse teams also began their seasons over the weekend, but what would have been their home openers were closed to the public due to ice still present on the field at Klöckner Stadium.

Behind closed doors, No. 10 women’s lacrosse fell to No. 16 Navy 12-10 to start the campaign on Friday.  Much of the result came down to the relentless charge of Navy’s attack, as the Midshipmen outshot the Cavaliers 33-21.  Next, the ‘Hoos face Richmond at home on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before hitting the road to College Park to face No. 6 Maryland on Saturday at noon.

Virginia men’s lacrosse battled Colgate on Sunday afternoon in similar surroundings but were able to engineer a hard-fought 19-14 victory.  Virginia kept the gas pedal down from start to finishin the wire-to-wire victory.  The men’s team will also battle Richmond, ranked No. 8 in the nation, this week but will do so on the road this Saturday at noon.

Wrestling

Once again taking to the mat at John Paul Jones Arena, the Hoos fell to No. 7 Virginia Tech 32-7 on Friday evening.  Despite the defeat, Gable Porter earned his 19th win of the year at 141 pounds, and Wynton Denkins pulled off an upset of national No. 6 Collin Gaj.  Next up for Virginia is No. 20 Pitt Friday in the Three Rivers area.
