Wednesday 3/22 News At Noon

Youngr–“Out Of My System”: 28 year-old Darius Darnell, out of Manchester, UK is the son of August Darnell, frontman of the 80’s band Kid Creole & The Coconuts. He’s formerly of the band Picture Book along with his brother, who took over the frontman position upon his departure. Youngr started out wanting to play basketball but realized he could get more girls if he played music. He was discovered when his live cover of The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition” went viral. Catch him in DC on the 28th.

Pop Etc.–“Routine”: The LA/NYC band consisting of Julian Harmon, Chris Chu and Jon Chu have released two full-length albums. The single is their first new material since their 2016 release, Souvenir.

Bash & Pop–“Anything Could Happen”: Tommy Stinson formed Bash & Pop in 1996 after the breakup of The Replacements. The band name was chosen through a contest on a New York radio contest. The band reunited in 2016 and the album, also titled Anything Could Happen, was crowd-funded last year and is out now. It is their first release in 24 years.

Thursday 3/23 News At Noon

Texas–“Let’s Work It Out”: The Glasgow band’s latest album, Jump On Board, is their first since 2013’s, The Conversation. It was produced and written in Glasgow and London by band members Sharleen Spiteri and Johnny McElhone and mixed by Craig Silvey who has mixed for Noel Gallagher, Arcade Fire and Florence + The Machine.

Blondie–“Long Time”: The new record, Pollinator, drops on May 5th and features album art by Shepard Fairey. This song is a collaboration with Dev Hynes, frontman of Blood Orange. 750 copies of the 7-inch single will be released as a record store day exclusive in the US and also includes a non-LP cut of the song, “The Breaks” written by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein.

Skinny Lister–“Injuries”: From the most recent release, The Devil The Heart and The Fight. The band has toured with the Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and Frank Turner and have performed on the Flogging Molly Cruise two years in a row.

Gorillaz–“We Got The Power” Feat. Jehnny Beth: Noel Gallagher of Oasis is also featured on this track from Damon Albarn’s animated band’s new record, Humanz. It will be released on April 28th.

Michelle Branch–“Best You Ever”: Patrick Carney of the Black Keys produced along with Gus Seyffert (Norah Jones, Beck). Branch will be touring this summer.

Darden Smith–“Love Will Win The War”: From the new album, Everything. He will be in Bluemont on May 2nd.

Foxygen–“On Lankershim”: From their first proper studio record, Hang. The duo of Jonathan Rado and Sam France also have a song on the new American Girl Amazon special, Ivy and Julie 1976.

Nate J.–“Alien”: The lead singer of the Canadian band, The Midway State’s debut solo album, Patchwork Blue, is out now. His real name is Nathan John Ferraro and he produced the album himself along with Max Roach & Midway State Guitarist, Mike Wise.

Black Lips–“Can’t Hold On”: The Atlanta Georgia rock band was formed in 1999 out of former members of The Reruns and Renegades. They’re known for doing crazy things onstage like lighting guitars on fire, puking, and letting a wild chicken run around.

Garland Jeffreys–“14 Steps To Harlem”: Jeffreys is still going strong after over 40 years in the business. This is the title track to his 15th album and he has an extensive tour coming up, dates TBA.

Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, James McAlister–“Saturn”: From their collaborative album, Planetarium. Dessner is of The National, Muhly is a contemporary classical music composer, and McAlister is a frequent collaborator with Sufjan.

Julien Baker–“Distant Solar Systems”: With this song, the 22-year-old Memphis musician explores the relationship between the cosmos and heartbreak and romance. She’s in Richmond with The Decemberists on April 4th.
